It was nearly 10 years for international prepaid phone cards to succeed in the call industry. As the process began originally in European countries, it then got greatly spread as the dominating method of communication worldwide. People buy the international prepaid calling card to call to either distant or adjacent destinations as telephone cards help them to handily place calls to every part of the globe. Prepaid call cards is the method to make calls preferred by more than sixty percent of the global population. Over 1 billion people in the countries of the world choose to apply their prepaid time for any calling needs. No difference if they need to make business or personal, home or international connections.

International telephone cards are greatly spread worldwide: one may use European call cards as UK prepaid call cards & USA call cards and different others.

It’s no wonder that the biggest calling cards market is today in China. It happens to be a promising market to spread to because of its great population. Not each Chinese citizen has his personal phone line, so the need for telecommunication means is large in the country.

Russia is the second largest market of telecommunication services around the world. This region is especially necessary for the world communication market. The scientists of Russia are considered to make progress in communication techniques development. Russians are expected to contriburte to the rise of prepaid telephone card spread. In the time of their lives 3 out of four Russian people prefer or will obviously prefer to use telephone cards.

The next region to be named in this international list is Brazil. It’s no wonder that there is such a strong demand for all available variants of telephone connection in Brazil. More than one hundred eighty three people live in Brazil and surely it makes the country a significant prepaid calling card market. Around 15 percent of Brazilian economy is positioned away from the country, which is as well important. Of course people are in demand for communication services when they have to do so much work away from their country.

The 4th position in the list of largest call card markets is referred to Italy. Italian people often say that they are the people that is known to enjoy long and emotional dialogues. This characteristic pecularity makes it important for the population of Italy to use reasonable call rates as they enjoy speaking with people on any possible distance.

Allocation of International Calling Codes

Posted in Calling Codes |

Especially to rationally distribute international telephone numbers to different lands and regions of the world as well as among mobile phone providers the pone numbering plan is used. It’s anyway not right to mix international dialing codes with numbering plans. In areas like Australia or North America there exists a closed numbering plan that involves fixed length territory codes and telephone numbers.

There is also an open numbering plan working in a number of countries that haven’t unified it by now. For this numbering plan the length of the area calling code and local telephone number can vary. Dialling the numbers denoted by this plan you have to be sure to anyway dial the figures of the subscriber’s number, while the figures of the dialing code mustn’t be always dialed.
That appears to be very much hard to standardize the rules. Even though the International Telecommunication Union or ITU tried to introduce general norms of numbering plans and international dialing codes, they still are different in different lands. The organization desided to assign 00 as a common international access code for all the participating countries. Some countries have answered yes to the offer and entered the code, but as assigning the combination was not mandatory for the state members in some of them like United States the dialling codes stayed as they were. Mixed up? Give a try to brand reverse phone number!

Area codes (the codes that stand for countries or group of countries) are defined by the international numbering plan. Specially to fix the codes for international calls there is the E.164 system. It states the normal extension of the dialled number. The phone numbers in any country are just conditioned by its active network. So here are the variants of regional country codes with:

- Defined norms of the calling code that contains several units like three in the USA or 1 in Australia.
- A non-defined size. That is when the number of units differs like in Argentina (from two up to 5), like in Japan (from one to five) or like in Peru and Syria (from 1 up to two).

- Particular standards offering that the subscriber’s number has the calling code in its scheme, like in Spain. People call it a “closed” numbering plan. In regions like Belgium and Italy, the Netherlands, african countries or others they use 0 as a trunk-line calling code.

In fact the rate of the call is mainly defined by the area dialing code. The price for calls on the territory of the area dialing code generally goes lower than for the calls to the telephone numbers with another area calling code. The calls to the telephone numbers with adjacent area calling codes are also charged at smaller price.

But as in States the costs for home calls are assigned by the state itself while inter-city calls are defined by competition, it turns so that home calls seem to be less cheap.

But it may appear so that one area dialling code covers a big territory. The calls then are to be priced considering the range of the call.

The valuation centers usually determine rates for area segments measured in parts of about 6, 12 or more miles. But it became different with the lack of control of home telephone services.

Today it’s becoming popular between the customers to turn to a so-called “all-you-can-eat” plan (a set rate of about 30 dollars per month as fixed for May 2008 letting connect with any place of United States).
There can be particular area dialling codes. They are created usually for mobile phone systems in the lands where they are paid by the user or for free, premium accounts.

There as well may be various special variants. For example in countries like Egypt area dialling codes evaluate nothing because the costs are similar for the whole country and in the UK the calling code is made of two pieces each with its cost.

Calls for Germany

Order a call from Germany? Truly there are a lot of situations to be alert when you decide on phone cards:

  • Online Phone Cards Terminate.
Usually this launches the very first time the calling card has been used. You can make calls up to the value available on the phone card before you surpass the working life. Many times all unused time is set free after the expiry date. (Though there are exceptions and on a number of phone cards international dissapear time if needed can be gotten back by upgrading)
  • Billing Increments.
This is the token telephone call length and the increment exploited to enumerate the phone call amount.

Slides from Mobile Internet Portal Strategies 08 (London)

My slides are available to view online or download from Slideshare. I hope that you find them useful, although I haven’t had time to add any audio yet. I intend to do so very soon. Meanwhile, if you have any burning questions, feel free to contact me via Slideshare or this blog post.

My favourite slide is slide 11 (below), which is a very simple framework for brainstorming a user experience story for your mobile application (although it would apply to any Web 2.0 application). This represents the phases that the user might go through, not necessarily in this order, but roughly so.
ux-narrative011.jpg

Whilst on the topic of UX, I was delighted to hear Michael Osborn (Times Newspapers) talk about their UX goal of achieving ‘flow’ for their mobile users. This is the principle of achieving effortlessness, such that the user remains happily immersed in the portal for a length of time, even in challenging environments (such as standing on a train). Interestingly, the average stay on the mobile portal is comparable to the average length of stay on their web portal, which is quite an achievement, although we need to consider more deeply what this implies (but here is not the place).

I had a chance to ask Michael if he had considered a means to quantify ‘flow’ in order to measure whether or not many users are experiencing it. The answer was no, but that is not a criticism of Michael or his team. It was really a set-up for a point I made later in my presentation about trying to define measurements for various UX objectives. Whilst I understand that certain aspects of ‘experience’ are difficult to define perhaps, the more that we can quantify the UX, the better chance we have of knowing that we are succeeding. This, like so many of my points in the presentation, is obvious. However, I still find that the obvious is overlooked all too often.

WWDC sold out…

Apple’s WWDC sold out for the first time in history

I so much wanted to attend this, which I had planned to do with my son (world’s youngest iPhone developer, I’m sure). We had to stay back whilst I finish a project. 3G iPhone, apps store and so much more! This must be one of the great events in the Apple calendar this year. Rumours are that the staff at Apple are really hyperactive in preparation.
